May 14, 2018  |  Layla Price-Bodkin

MPD Patrol Sergeant Nate McBee has retired after serving the citizens of Marion for nearly 23 years. Sgt. McBee first accepted a Dispatch position with the Marion Police Department on July 2nd, 1995, but soon transitioned onto the road as a Patrol Officer on Dec. 17th, 1996. He had since served in many capacities — as a Field Training Officer, Shift Sergeant, Traffic Sergeant, and most recently held the position of 3rd Shift Patrol Sergeant.

McBee served as an Accident Reconstructionist specializing in Heavy Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle crashes. He holds certification to deploy all over the state and beyond during Critical Incidents such as Police Action Shootings. McBee was a member of the narcotics-combatting JEAN Team, and is one of 3 individuals who spearheaded and implemented the Youth Academy. He is also a founding member of the MPD Honor Guard, and served many years as its Commander.

Over the past few years, McBee has been pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education Administration, and has been gaining experience teaching History at Anderson Preparatory Academy. His tenure with MPD has given him skills to lead a classroom and discipline students while being able to relate individually. After achieving his Master’s, he plans to pursue a Doctorate, and continue to advance in teaching while using his expertise in law enforcement as a resource to the education system.

McBee said he’s excited to fully embark on a career with normal hours, but will miss working with fellow officers, particularly helping train them. I have always told incoming officers that I want them to be better than me.”

He said he also looks forward to continuing to serve with the Honor Guard. This is something I take to heart…showing honor for a profession that’s not being honored like it used to be. There’s a larger group out there that doesn’t respect police officers, so it’s my wish to continue to do that.”

McBee will continue to volunteer as the Assistant District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America, as well as serve as an Active Reserve Officer with the Van Buren Police Department.

McBee’s last working day with MPD was Saturday, May 12th.
