About

The City of Marion

Marion is a small city of about 28,000 people located in Grant County in the heart of Indiana. Our city is home to many innovative businesses, resourceful and caring non-profit organizations, and hard-working, tenacious, loyal citizens. Marion is one of the best cities in the U.S. to raise a family, offering low tax rates, low cost of living, and many quality-of-life amenities.

Our Mission

To bring positive energy and growth to the Marion community through a proactive approach based on honesty, collaboration, and accountability. It is our duty to foster and preserve a safe, healthy, and thriving environment full of opportunity for our family of citizens and visitors alike.

From The Mayor

Whether you are a business or a family, Marion is a great place to invest.

We take pride in our award-winning public gardens, waterpark, and holiday walkway of lights.

Marion has an outstanding private hospital, innovative VA hospital, and a national cemetery. We are easy to access with one of the best airports in the state. Marion is home to the largest private college in Indiana, a state-of-the-art tech college, and exemplary public and private schools. While our schools hold many championship titles, our true champions are the citizens that make our community a special place to call home.

Our History

Marion, Indiana was named after the Revolutionary War General, Francis Marion. Martin Boots and David Branson each donated 30 acres of land to develop a city by the flowing Mississinewa River after nearly 20 years of settlement following the historic Battle of the Mississinewa of 1812. The Indiana General Assembly signed Marion into incorporation on May 20th1832.
