After a twenty-year robust career with the Marion Police Department, Detective Shawn Sizemore is retiring and venturing into a new chapter of life.

Sizemore was born in Marion, raised in Jonesboro, and attended Mississinewa High School where he graduated in 1991. He then joined the United States Marine Corps, honorably serving from 1992 – 1998

Sizemore’s career with MPD began on June 1st 2005. During his career, he served in Patrol (including as Patrol Sergeant), in Narcotics, as Evidence & Property Manager, and most recently as a Detective. Sizemore also served many years with MPD Honor Guard through which he was, not only be able to honor our retirees for their service to this community, but to travel the State of Indiana and honor officers killed in the line of duty.”

Sizemore expressed, To my brothers and sisters in blue, not a day goes by that I don’t think about the death and destruction that we have seen and had to deal with over the years. What I do know is that I would not have been able to continue this great career without each and every one of you by my side as we dealt with the types of things no one should ever have to see. I am truly blessed to be part of this Thin Blue Line’ family. Remember to treat everyone the way you want to be treated, be nice until its time not to be nice, but most importantly, return home at the end of your shift to your families.”

To my family, I want to thank you for all of the love and support that you have shown me over the years. I know it was not easy not knowing if I was okay or coming home until I walked through the door at the end of my shift. Without your love and support I would not have been able to work in the greatest job there ever was.”

He concluded, To the community that I have served for the last 20 years — Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve this great community, and the awesome opportunity to meet some of the most amazing people who live in Marion. Though our paths may have only crossed once or twice, and it could have been on the worse day of your life, we may never see each other or talk to each other again, but know that I will never forget you and the impact you made on my life throughout my career.”

Sizemore will soon begin a new career with Riverside Community Federal Credit Union, in large part to continue his love for interacting with the people of the community.

Marion Police Chief David Gilbert reflected, Shawn Sizemore has been a wonderful servant leader for the Marion Police Department and the citizens of Marion for two decades. Regardless of assignment, Shawn was reliable, accountable and effective. Countless citizens have been helped by virtue of Shawn’s commitment to service and duty. Every candidate seeking a job in law enforcement says during his or her interview that the reason they want to be a police officer is to help people”. Shawn said it and meant it sincerely and proved that sincerity literally hundreds of times by his actions.

As a partner, Shawn’s fidelity to his fellow officers and their safety was paramount. If you were on Shawn’s squad and needed back up, you knew it would be there, no matter the danger or risk to himself. Further, this officer willingly stood up to career criminals who others feared in order that good people could feel and be safer.

Shawn accomplished many, many noteworthy things in his career, but his contribution to the creation, vitality and professionalism of the MPD Honor Guard stands out. Shawn was committed to honoring our retired partners and their families with distinguished services when they passed away after serving well. Importantly, this officer was recruited to serve as an integral part of the statewide team tasked with providing dignified funeral services for police officers killed in the line of duty in Indiana and still contributes in this capacity.

Shawn served well and has been a fantastic partner. He will be missed dearly but, on behalf of the entire department, we wish him well as he begins the next part of his journey away from MPD. But we know that no matter what vocation he has, Shawn will always bleed MPD blue and will always be our partner. Congratulations and thank you for your service, Shawn.”
