If you’ve heard the buzz, it’s true. The City of Marion is bringing the fireworks display back to Matter Park for this year’s Fourth of July celebration!
On Tuesday, July 3rd, the City with support from Friends of the Gardens, will welcome back national pop star, singer/songwriter and piano prodigy, Jon McLaughlin, as the headlining act of the evening along with emerging country star, Jessie Brown, and well-known hometown band, the Posse. This free community event will feature lots of festivities in the Gardens of Matter Park (& the Meadow) including a kid’s carnival, yard games & activities, festive summer food, and cool refreshments.
Mayor Jess Alumbaugh explained having the fireworks in Matter Park will provide an opportunity for the community to gather and enjoy the acres of greenspace that the Park offers. “In the past, I’ve seen families sitting in cars to watch the fireworks near the downtown area. This change will hopefully promote a continued sense of community which has been growing throughout the city.”
The Gardens’ Programs & Events Director, Julie Fauser, said she really wanted the fireworks to be back in the park. “There’s lots of space, people can bring their own yard games, picnics & blankets, and come together a little more than in separate downtown lots.”
The July 3rd fireworks display in Matter Park will start after dusk, lasting 25 minutes, and can best be viewed in the Gardens as well as in and around the tennis court area and across N. Matter Park Rd. in the grass.
