Common Council Accepting Applications for Tree Board Share

The Mar­i­on City Coun­cil is estab­lish­ing the Tree Board. This board con­sists of five (5) mem­bers, three (3) mem­bers of whom are appoint­ed by the City Coun­cil, two (2) mem­bers appoint­ed by the may­or; all of whom must be cit­i­zens and res­i­dents of the city of Mar­i­on. Terms will be for three (3) years except for the term of two (2) of the mem­bers appoint­ed to the board shall be only one (1) year. The term of two (2) oth­er mem­bers shall be two (2) years. Fol­low­ing these short­er terms for the board mem­bers shall then serve for three (3) years. A mem­ber can be re-appoint­ed to the board for six (6) con­sec­u­tive terms and must sit out two (2) terms before re-appoint­ment. In the event of a vacan­cy occur­ring dur­ing a term, the suc­ces­sor will be appoint­ed for the unex­pired por­tion of the term. All appoint­ments shall serve with­out com­pen­sa­tion. The Tree Board shall choose its offi­cers, make rules, reg­u­la­tions, and keep a jour­nal of all pro­ceed­ings which will be pro­vid­ed and approved by the City Coun­cil. A major­i­ty of the mem­bers shall be a quo­rum for the trans­ac­tion of business.

The Board will be respon­si­ble for the study, inves­ti­ga­tion, coun­cil, devel­op­ment, and update annu­al­ly and admin­is­ter the writ­ten plan (“Tree Board Plan”) for the care, preser­va­tion, plant­i­ng, replant­i­ng, removal, or dis­pos­al of trees and shrubs in parks, along the street, and in oth­er pub­lic places. The Tree Board plan shall con­sist of, but not lim­it­ed to the fol­low­ing; species, required pro­ce­dure for plant­i­ng trees, spac­ing of trees, pro­vide coun­sel to cit­i­zens for plant­i­ng, guide­lines of dis­tances approved near curb or side­walk, and the cities rights of prun­ing, main­tain­ing, and removal in pub­lic areas and right-a-ways and com­pre­hen­sive list of rea­son­ing for such actions. This plan will be pre­sent­ed, reviewed, and approved by the City Coun­cil and upon accep­tance of ordi­nances and/​or plans, shall then con­sti­tute the offi­cial com­pre­hen­sive city tree plan for the City of Mar­i­on. The Tree Board shall also at the request of the City Coun­cil con­sid­er, inves­ti­gate, make find­ings, report, and rec­om­mend upon any spe­cial mat­ter of the ques­tions com­ing with­in the scope of its work. 

Please sub­mit your appli­ca­tion to the City Clerk’s office, the City Coun­cil will review the appli­ca­tions as received to deter­mine the five (5) appoint­ments by March 15^th, 2022.
