The City of Marion Transportation Department has been working diligently on serving the people of Marion who need transportation amid a very difficult time due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
Marion Transit is transporting individuals to the doctor, pharmacy, work, and grocery stores. This special service for essential needs is done by call-in only. Pick-up times are scheduled by calling the bus terminal at least 24 hours in advance. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) rules have stayed the same. Dispatchers are patient and professional in setting up schedules to fit everyone’s needs. The bus drivers are patient and professional while also understanding that it is a scary time for everyone.
Marion Transit employees are taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy. They do not just take people to the destinations mentioned — they also clean and sterilize every bus inside and out daily. After dropping off passengers, the bus drivers spray the bus with a disinfectant to make sure the bus is ready for the next passenger. There is a two-passenger limit on each bus at any given time. All bus drivers wear a mask and gloves, and passengers must wear a mask to enter.
Marion Transit employees are on the front lines savings lives. They are taking people to places they would otherwise never reach if it weren’t for the Marion Transit System. They are ensuring passengers’ needs for dialysis, food, and medicine are met, to name a few.
Marion Transportation Director, Jeff Edwards, found it difficult to properly thank his team. “Words cannot express how much I appreciate the work that the City of Marion Transportation employees are doing during this time,” said Edwards. “I also want to thank Mayor Jess Alumbaugh and Chief of Staff Mike Flynn for staying in constant communication with us.”
