For the first time since the late 1990s, City of Marion Neighborhood Associations are coming together to celebrate National Night Out by hosting a citywide event! The evening of August 6th, 2019 will be filled with fun and educational activities hosted by the Neighborhood Associations, Marion Police Department, Marion Fire Department, and city officials. National Night Out (“NNO”) will include live music, demonstrations and activities with first responders, and each active Neighborhood Association will be present to help neighbors get connected to the work being done to build and maintain welcoming neighborhoods. Prizes will also be given promoting neighborhood beautification.
The planning committee is encouraging neighbors to save the date for August 6th from 6 — 9pm. Food vendors will open at 5pm. The event will be held Downtown, Marion in the newly renovated 5th Street Commons (Lot on 5th Street between Washington and Adams).
Businesses or organizations interested in either hosting a booth or making a donation towards prize packages may contact City of Marion Neighborhood Association Coordinator, Kayla Johnson. The committee is requesting prize donations promoting beautification and building welcoming neighborhoods, however, a variety of prizes are welcome! Please make contact by July 19th to participate.
Johnson explained that hosting an annual campaign celebrating the collaborative work being done to build and maintain Marion neighborhoods is important. “Without trusting relationships between neighbors, first responders, and city officials, our neighborhoods suffer,” emphasized Johnson. She hopes NNO can be a time to celebrate the trust being built and the work being done.
Mayor Jess Alumbaugh expressed his excitement for the opportunity the community has to come together through NNO. “My belief is that the way to a better community is through building relationships with our neighbors. So, on August 6th, let’s celebrate each other and the work that is being done in our great community!”
About National Night Out:
Thirty-five years ago, the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) created NNO as an annual community-building campaign to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live and work. The NATW encourages communities to build on the purpose of the campaign and make it their own. Follow the link for more information about the national campaign: https://natw.org/.
