Marion Named #1 Most Affordable Metro in the U.S. Share

Jan 19, 2018  |  Layla Price-Bodkin

According to a report released this week by Realtor.com®, Marion was found to be the #1 Most Affordable Metro in the nation. The report relays the dollar stretches far in Marion, with the median price of a home at $66,750, and median price of its most affordable ZIP code at $45,000. Realtor.com® interviewed local broker, Charmayne Saylors, who stated that for about $70,000, one can easily purchase a 3‑bedroom home with a garage.

The report summarized Marion’s main industries, agriculture & manufacturing, recognizing General Motors’ Marion Metal Stamping Plant’s recent multi-million dollar investment. The release also touted our county’s incredibly low tax rates across the board.

The article erroneously reported that Marion was located in Marion County, however the Grant County unemployment rate is relatively similar at 3.9% according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Furthermore, Indiana’s jobless rate has been decreasing remarkably over the past decade, from 10.7% in 2009 to 3.7% at the end of 2017.

Marion Mayor Jess Alumbaugh says he’s not surprised by the report.

We have seen a steady growth in the housing market here in Marion. While there has always been a population that commutes to jobs outside of Marion, we are now seeing individuals purchasing homes in the Marion area and commuting to jobs outside of the county. This is one small example of why we are committed in making Marion a quality of life’ place people want to live.”
