The City of Marion has received a generous donation from Marion High School alum Julie Buck Moorehead towards the creation of a sports complex in Matter Park in her grandparents’ honor. The Buck Family Sports Complex will house basketball courts for the first time in Matter Park, as well as tennis courts, and will enable the game of soccer tennis for the first time, all within the Complex.

The Buck Family Sports Complex will create a chain reaction by increasing the number of pickleball courts by moving the tennis courts to the Complex. Additionally, Marion High School is working with community tennis players to create new opportunities at the high school and through the Ken Hill annual Hotline” tennis tournament. Since the new complex will replace the current softball diamond, the City is working on adding softball to Ballard Field in the future.

A video created by the City of Marion in partnership with Media Outfitters, LLC, explains more, and is found through the link below.

An official groundbreaking for the Buck Family Sports Complex will be taking place on Wednesday, May 7th, 2025 at 11am at the former softball diamond in Matter Park (1 Matter Park Circle). It should be open in the fall of this year.
