The Chronicle-Tribune was created in 1968 when The Marion Chronicle (established in 1865 as an evening newspaper) was combined with The Marion Leader-Tribune (established in 1912 as a morning newspaper); the papers had published a combined Sunday edition under the Chronicle-Tribune name. It was published as an all-day newspaper with morning and evening editions until the evening edition was eliminated in 1973. The paper was purchased by Gannett Co. in 1971.
In May 2007, Gannett donated the Chronicle-Tribune to the Gannett Foundation. On July 2nd, 2007, the paper was sold to Paxton Media Group. With the purchase, the Chronicle-Tribune became the 10th – and largest – Paxton property in Indiana.
Said Publisher, Kelly Miller, of the Chronicle-Tribune’s role in the Marion community, “Working, living, and doing business in Marion allows us to help the community. Of course, the newspaper is community-minded, and the size of Marion allows for a direct impact. It is rewarding because we can see the good and work to better our surroundings.”
The C‑T recently added a new Managing Editor, Morgan Keller. Morgan is an IWU grad with great ties to the community and the college. “She is bringing a breath of fresh air and a youthfulness that will move the C‑T forward into the future,” Miller said.
Speaking of the Chronicle-Tribune’s future, Miller added, “As times change, we need to continue to focus on moving our content to digital. We hope our customers are enjoying our new updates to the e‑edition. We understand our role in the community and plan to continue for years to come.”
The Chronicle-Tribune has two new journalism scholarships in the community: one scholarship to IWU and one to Taylor University. They are proud to offer budding journalists the opportunity to learn the media business. There will always be a need for journalists, and the C‑T wants to promote the news business and the core of what they do to help the community.
Above all, Miller expressed, “We are committed to Grant County for the long term. Someday the news may look different, but it will always be a vital part of a healthy community.”
The Chronicle-Tribune is located at 610 S. Adams Street and may be reached at 765.664.5111.
