City Offers Assistance as Bagged Leaf Collection Begins

Leaf collection began this week, and the City of Marion will continue to offer assistance for citizens who need yard waste bags. The City is grateful to continue the assistance program thanks to Linda Wilk’s involvement, and to Lowe’s for donating more bags for the 2017 fall season.

Residents may come to City Hall in the mayor’s office and request bags at the reception counter. They may also call ahead at 765-662-9931. Bags are given away on a first-come first-served basis.

Bagged leaves are being picked up on the same day as trash pickup (Marion Utilities handles trash, and Marion Citywide Maintenance handles leaf pickup). Trash and Leaf Pickup will occur on the same day, but not necessarily the same time. Residents are simply asked to set out leaf bags on the same evening as trash.

City officials thank residents for not blowing or raking leaves into the street. Like last fall, the City is no longer using a vacuuming system due to outdated equipment and high cost.

Marion Utilities also thanks residents for their participation, explaining it not only prevents the drains from getting clogged, but it helps them keep the streets tidy.

Curt Simpkins, a supervisor with Marion Utilities, explained how citizen participation helps them do their job. “When we do get a rain, the intersections don’t flood from all the grass and leaves gathering on the storm drains. Plus, it just looks nicer.”

This press release along with all other city-related information may now be found on the City of Marion’s new website, The former web domain is no longer active.
